🚫 India Orders X to Block Thousands of Accounts
The Indian government has ordered social media platform X to block over 8,000 accounts, sparking backlash over free speech violations.
According to Dawn News, the move comes after exposures of misleading propaganda linked to the Indian government. Critics say this action reveals the erosion of secularism under Prime Minister Modi.
📢 No Legal Explanation for the Ban
The X administration confirmed receiving an executive order from the Indian government. However, they said no legal justification or explanation was provided for banning many of the accounts.
“A large number of accounts were removed without cause,” said a spokesperson. “We are reviewing all legal options and encourage affected users to approach the courts.”
🛑 Journalists and Activists Targeted
Among those blocked are international media outlets, independent journalists, and social media activists who shared content countering the government’s narrative—particularly following the Pahalgam incident.
Many of the removed accounts were reportedly working to expose misinformation spread by Indian agents operating online after the April 22 attack.
⚖️ A Blow to Freedom of Expression
The X administration called the mass suspension an attack on freedom of expression.
India did not clarify which laws were violated or what content triggered the bans, adding to concerns about increasing government censorship in the country.
“This appears to be a politically motivated attempt to silence opposing voices,” a digital rights advocate stated.
